nonstop flights to the big easy. many of the people who left today couldn't afford to take the whole week off work, but one fan found a way around that. >> i'm playing hooky with my boss who is coming with me. my wife, by the way. >> and once they hit the granted ground in new orleans, bands and people handing out information are welcoming super bowl travelers to town. airport officials say the big test comes monday when as many as 50,000 fans flying out. also in the news tonight, police in alabama are still negotiating with an accused killer holding a special need kindergartener captive. the man who neighbors identify as 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes has been held up in an underground shelter since tuesday. police say he is holding a five- year-old boy that he snatched from a school bus after shooting and killing the driver. >> they stopped the bus and

mr. dyke stepped on the bus and demanded a couple children around 6 to 8 years old. as we heard the little boy fainted. >> negotiators have been talking with dyke through a pvc pipe. they are passing food and medicine to the boy. an old problem for san jose. graffiti has gotten much worse and with the recent police department cuts, some fear the tagging is only escalating. taggers covered a railroad overpass and sound walls on both sides of highway 101. it's not only along the freeways. but in neighborhoods as well. now the city is fighting back. >> so the minute they throw it up, we want to get on top of it. there is that psychological angle. not leaving it up so people reaps rewards. >> police spokesman says budget problems forced the department to eliminate the graffiti task force.

two officers ran intelligence and surveillance operations, but not anymore. nasa taking to the bay area sky to find out what is in it. several aircraft, including one, took off today to collect data on air quality. it was flying low over pollution, hot spots like interstate 680. it will study wind currents to help predict where the dirty air is coming from and where it's going. are they a testament to eternal love or dangerous eyesores that need to come down? cbs 5 reporter is there where city officials are being accused of a heartless move. kit. >> reporter: they are saying they are dousing the romance, being a killjoy. that's because they have given people six weeks warning to reclaim their so-called love lives. tomorrow, workers will show up with bolt cutters and take them off. on the main street bridge over highway 17, it is government, not love, that conquers all.

>> a big issue about nothing. i mean, it's just absurd that people with coat something so insignificant. >> back in august, kim and caroline celebrated their wedding anniversary with this, a personal inscription. they were the first to attach it to the bridge and town as a symbol of their marriage of 30 years. >> symbolizes unity of us and a permanence. after we're long gone, that lock should stay in place. >> so called love locks are a european tradition. people attach them to bridges and throw away the keys. word spread and as many as 28 locks appeared by the end of the year. they thought they started a trend that would last generations, but four months after it all began, the city put up a sign saying the locks were illegal and had to go. >> when it finally looked like it was going to come to an end, for some reason it sucker punched me. i was down in the dumps.

>> too many locks would weigh down the fence, which could topple over in a wind storm and fall into john coming traffic. also, offensive messages. >> what do you tell people who say you are being too careful? >> well, i don't know that you can be too careful when you talk about traffic safety and roadway safety. >> you don't buy that? >> not at all. it has nothing to do with traffic. >> and so they have reached a compromise. the new home for the lot will be at the art museum a couple blocks away. they'll have an opening ceremony on february 13. cbs 5. some people may call it effective, other say it's sports karma. how some people in the bay area are heavying differentially because of the 49ers. we know manti te'o was duked by a girlfriend.

>> in his research with professional athletes, the nature makes them a breeding ground for superstitions, and the more likely superstitions will become part of the game plan. >> football is a really good example of a kind of sport that has a lot of uncertainty to it. there's a lot of luck involved. so that's exactly the kind of situation that gets people playing. do all kinds of superstitious activities. not only the players, but the fans. >> i promise i wouldn't get another jersey until we win another super bowl. >> how old is your last jersey? >> '94, '95. >> he wears a shirt and other team gear, but not a football jersey. >> would you be be jynxing the team? >> including never walking on the team logo in the middle of the field. seemed to work for him.
